Reading is fun, not a chore! We need to have high interest stories to encourage reading books to catch up to peers in mainstream classes. For many students, their parents are illiterate in English as well as their native language. Breaking the cycle of illiteracy and language barrier is difficult without reading material. Most of my students are low income refugees who do not have books at home. Reading habits at home are virtually non-existent; there's a need to develop an enjoyment of reading outside of school as opposed to the common misconception that all reading is only for homework.
