For thirty years, I have taught at a small high school in the mountains of rural southwestern Virginia. Very few students in our school would be considered upper middle class; most fall far below. The major employers in our area are the hospital, school system and a pulp paper mill. In spite of a lack of money, it has been my great pleasure to teach these students and to know their families. Visitors to our school often comment on the behavior and manners of our students. Sadly, I have noticed that my students feel a disconnect from the natural world, the outdoors. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, a state park and several national forests, many cannot identify an oak tree, a robin, or distinguish the blooms of a dogwood from a red bud. With school curricula dictated by learning standards, little time and/or attention is paid to those topics that motivate and inspire. My students are literally drowning in standardized testing and suffering from apathy as a result.
