My students are enthusiastic and motivated. They are 6th-8th graders who are capable of creating 10 minute long news shows: editing videos, using cameras, and designing scripts. They have created their own radio broadcast and blog feed. Student news has become their passion. We are one of the only middle school broadcasting teams in the state of South Carolina who attempt to produce full weekly broadcasts. However, because we aren't a core class, funding is just not there. Our school is one of the highest rated middle schools in the state and the class is the most popular in the school. It has become so popular that an application process is now required. With that comes need for equipment. We lack cameras and computers to accommodate most of our student needs. Some students have nothing to learn on and spend much of the time watching instead of engaging and learning. Because of their motivation, however, they stick with it to learn and grow better at a craft many see as their future.
