Our magnet school is comprised of urban students, the majority of which reside below the poverty line. Home life is very difficult for them. Despite financial and social/emotional challenges, our students have an innate and untapped love for music. Students cannot pry themselves away from the school’s broken percussion instruments, begging for opportunities to play. They break out into song uninvited, just looking for a chance to shine. Few opportunities exist for our students to express themselves or harness the benefits of working as a community, and performing music with new instruments can foster discipline in a meaningful and fun way. Music is a talent that these students possess, and I believe it is the activity through which they will find solace to become successful.
