Caine was a 9-year-old who went to work with his father one summer in east LA. His dad had lots of cardboard boxes, so Caine decided to create an arcade out of cardboard. A short film was made highlighting his innovation (Caine's Arcade on youtube), and when I showed it to my 4th and 5th graders, their eyes lit up as well as the light bulbs in their heads. The hot glue guns and glue sticks in combination with the inspiration from Caine and cardboard will enable my students to use their imaginations as well as practice the skills of problem-solving, engineering, math, and writing to create their very own cardboard arcade games. Once the arcade is complete, my students will play their games and invite a real-world audience (our 1st - 3rd graders)to come and play.
