One area that my students consistently struggle with is reading. With the increased focus on technology in their lives, many have lacked the opportunity to view reading as a pleasurable activity. I have had students in the past proclaim with certainty that any book that doesn't have a movie isn't worth reading, and this is the challenge we face - many students would prefer to consume media over reading a book. Our school encourages sustained reading twice a week to motivate students to increase their literacy levels, but often this time is met with groans and complaints. By bringing books like these into the classroom, I hope to challenge the idea that reading is a chore or only done for schoolwork. My students are drawn to stories about real issues that high schoolers experience, and the books in this collection not only reflect the challenges they may face in their own lives but also are accessible at their literacy levels. I have been slowly building my library collection and have seen how quickly attitudes change once the student is paired with the right book. With just a handful of hi-lo (high interest/low readability) books in my classroom I have had some of my most reluctant readers ask me to find them more material. Your generous donation helps me do just that - find my students a greater breadth of materials to continue and encourage their transition from thinking reading is boring to realizing that reading is fun.
