First grade students are at the age where they are learning how to deal with big emotions. During COVID, they have even more difficult emotions to deal with. My goal by implementing a calm down corner is to provide students with a place to notice and self regulate their emotions to improve our learning environment. When a student begins to feel upset, they will be able to take their sensory box into the corner of the classroom where I will make it cozy to spend 5 minutes alone to regulate their emotions. I will provide them with visuals and examples to help them through the process. I want my students to know it is okay to have these emotions, but we must learn to deal with them in a healthy manner.
