All of my 19 students are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing as well as 95% eligible for free lunch and most of them come from homes in which English is not the first language. Typically they are one to eight grade levels below their hearing peers in language development. They need visual supports along with their auditory listening, speech reading, English literacy and American Sign Language practice to support language development. We are in the Bronx and as an Itinerant Teacher I visit several school sites every week to see my students-- two high schools, two middle schools, two elementary schools, two special education schools. My students are curious and love to learn, they particularly love technology not only because it's fun but because it provides that additional visual support they need as visual learners.
