I am the only 6th grade Science teacher in our elementary school, which is in the Delta Region of Arkansas. As with many schools in our area we have a high poverty rate. Children who live in poverty don't have Lego's to build with because they are too expensive and are not necessary for survival, so many of my students had no experience building with them. Surprising isn't it? I was amazed with the enthusiasm and intrigue at the introduction of Lego's. They immediately began imagining and creating. They began engaging in dialog with their team members. Through constructive conversations, they completed projects. My students have grown beyond Lego's and now require more challenging materials that stimulate learning. Materials like K'nex kits, Robotic kits and Science kits will provide such learning experiences. I have 84 students who have different learning styles and are at different learning levels, these materials will help meet the needs of all my students.
