Our day is broken down in percentages of time we should be spending in Spanish/English. 2nd grade students should spend roughly 60% of the day in Spanish instruction and 40% in English. In third grade it moves to 50/50 and so on until 6th grade. In second grade as well as the other primary grades, literacy is taught directly in both languages Spanish and English. Math and writing are explicitly in Spanish. All of my students take part in English and Spanish guided reading groups with me in which we focus on word work, writing, comprehension, etc.m as well to promote bilingualism and bi-literacy in all students.
