"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Martin Luther King, Jr. African American males continue to struggle to connect their academic life to their social life. As educators, we often fail to provide a sense of safety and hope as well as develop a sense of power over their education in these students. The Distinguished Gentlemen program is designed to link the social and academic life of at-risk African American males, developing a sense of hope and power prior to beginning high school, so the dropout rate will decrease. The students that will be served are predominantly black in rural SC. Based upon state test scores, these students are not achieving success as compared to other subgroups. The African American males make up about 80% of our special education population and receive about 85% of the school referrals.
