The high school where I teach is an impoverished, inner-city neighborhood in upstate New York. My eleventh grade students have been recommended for a block period English course based on their extremely low literacy skills, with high hopes that the extra instruction time will be beneficial when it comes time to passing the New York State regents exam in June, as well as preparing students to become both “college and career ready”. I am impressed on a daily basis with my students' efforts and drive to persevere to perform at grade level, despite their low skill sets.
