My students are aged seven and eight years old. Many of them are very developmentally immature and behave more like kindergartners and first graders then middle-of-the-year second graders. Academically, about two-thirds are below grade level in math and reading. Several of my students are taking ADD and ADHD medication, while some others are displaying signs of ADHD but are not on medication. My class this year is very active and talkative. They will often ask to sit on the rug or in the "concentration station" (a plastic tub with a pillow) to help them focus. My school is mostly made up of lower to middle class families. The school is very supportive of its students and staff and wants success for every child.
