I teach kindergarten at a Title 1, low income school in south Louisiana. Approximately 30% of my students come to school without the benefit of child-care services such as Pre-K, Headstart, or daycare. Although these students have not been introduced to basic pre-kindergarten skills such as color or shape recognition, it is my job to have them reading on a first grade level and above by the end of the school year. When I transferred to this school two years ago, I began teaching in a classroom with very little picture books for the students to read. I had to go to local Salvation Army and Goodwill stores to purchase books for my students to read. It has been a struggle to supply my classroom with the appropriate reading books for my students since many of the books are not on their reading level.
