My students have a wide range of disabilities but all struggle with sensory issues. A sensory room that contains items specific to each of their needs will give them a space to retreat to when the classroom environment becomes overwhelming to them. The goal of a sensory room is to calm students who have sensory issues, so they can be in a "learning" frame of mind. Each of the requested sensory resources will be an asset in sensory integration. Sensory meltdowns can be brought on by external stimuli that are out of the child's control (sensory overload) or can be the need for sensory stimulation (sensory under-load). Meltdowns within a classroom environment can be a snowball effect. This is why it is important for the student to have a place to calm down so that other students can continue learning.
