My students are a diverse group with different skills (and a wide range of skill levels), languages, cultural, class, and ethnic backgrounds.They have experienced different immigration and migration experiences, a wide variety of obstacles, and an unlimited amount of ways to surprise me with their depth of understanding and ability to comprehend and apply new information. They are a challenge academically in that many are struggling readers who need a lot of assistance and scaffolding in order to access information, and bring many social and personal problems with them to school that need to be addressed in order for them to be in a state of mind and body to learn. But, these challenges also offer opportunity for me to help students grow and for students to enrich the learning environment with their experiences and various perspectives.
