I work with students who have the greatest academic needs at our school. Many of our students come from economically-disadvantaged situations and live in rural areas. In my role as a special educator, I place special attention on students who are struggling academically. Actually, I work with almost all of the students at our school because I work inside all of the elementary classrooms, so all the students know me. I work with students in small groups that have special needs and I also work with other students in small groups that are needing support in decoding words, printing and spelling words, reading fluently, or computing numbers. I am trying my best to inspire students, to build self-confidence, and to keep enthusiasm going. My small group area for working with students has hand-me-down furniture. To build self-esteem, to instruct clearly, and to provide a safe, inspiring learning environment, I need 4 suitable chairs (ideally chairs that allow movement to students who lose focus sitting the same way all day), an adjustable easel that allows visibility of materials for leading instruction in various seating configurations, and chart paper to record and review learning for students. The easel that holds chart paper and the chart paper will allow me to record weekly spelling and decoding words with large picture cues for beginning readers and to clearly review the words daily; will allow me to create phonemic awareness activities where students slide toy cars and pointers between phonemes and blend the sounds; will allow me to partner students for comprehension activities in which partners create shared idea webs/charts based on the readings; will allow me to demonstrate problem-solving steps in math clearly and visibly; and will allow me to post the procedures to lessons with picture cue symbols for beginning readers.
