Our school is implementing Readers' Workshop this year, which is a program designed to develop reading stamina and comprehension skills while allowing students to choose the books they read. Once a week, students will be 'book shopping' in our classroom library to pick books that are not only at their individual reading level, but also interesting to them. A key element of the workshop model is to give students the ability to choose the books they read. Building an extensive classroom library to include books from many different genres and styles of writing is extremely important, as it will draw students with a variety of interests into the enjoyment of reading. Students that are interested in what they are reading will be more successful in the Reader's Workshop model, and they will be more excited about applying the skills they learn to the texts they are reading. It is also important to have books that represent a wide range of reading levels, so that students at different levels have a selection of books to choose from. In my current library, I primarily have books for 1st and 2nd graders. This year, I am teaching a 3rd grade class, but I have a limited supply of 3rd grade level (and above) books. The books I selected are all high-interest books at reading levels for 3rd graders. These books correlate with the units in our Reader's Workshop curriculum. Through funding this project, you will enable me to build a better library with a wider range of reading levels. This will help me reach more students in teaching them the love of reading!
