My students are 28 inquisitive, eager, motivated, and smart 9 and 10 year old students. They come every day excited to learn, read, ask questions, think, and discover. Their favorite part of the day is read aloud when I read to them from a novel and all I ask is that they listen and enjoy. It isn't their favorite because it seems easy, it's their favorite because I love it, I love reading to them, and through read aloud, I teach them the love of reading. Teaching a love of reading is the first step in creating good readers. At our school, which has a majority of minority, low-income, second language learners for students, books are a ticket to getting a better education than their parents. They are a ticket to having a successful career. They are a ticket to traveling the world. Books show my students the possibilities that are before them and their continued devouring and learning from literature bring those possibilities within their grasp.
