Our theatre program has a reputation for putting on shows that bring healing and connection to our students and our community. We take kids who don't fit in a typical high school environment or who have difficult home circumstances, give them a place to feel safe and loved, and help them develop skills, knowledge, and emotional health. This year, thanks to our diverse cast, we're putting on a production of Once On This Island, a play that deals with uniting people across racial and economic divides. We plan to use this play as a vehicle for helping our students connect with each other, for featuring minority students who don't normally get as much of the spotlight, and for exploring the value and power of cultural stories in creating strong communities. The technical work at our school is all done by students, so they'll be using these materials to learn real-world skills in a context that will help them think critically and compassionately about their peers, and become better members of their community. By contributing to this project, you'll help our students create a beautiful set on which to tell this powerful story.
