Most of my students did not benefit from having attended any kind of preschool program. First grade reading skills are a real challenge for many of my students. In order to give these students as much differentiation and individualized instruction as I can, I teach small groups established by ability. While I am working with a group, I have other groups, established by reading levels, working on varied reading stations created especially for each group. One important, fun center is our listening center which has multiple copies of one title with a CD. This center allows students to listen to a book of a higher level and suits the auditory learners. Following listening, the group works together on a myriad of activities. The one we have now is well-used and needs replacing. I feel the biggest factor in helping students read is to instill the joy of reading. Students love the listening center! I hope you can help us continue to enjoy this aspect of our reading program.
