Our school contains grades 6-12, so many of our high school students have been attending this school since they were young children. My students live in a community that was severely affected by Hurricane Sandy. Many of them lost their homes and family businesses. The neighborhood has not yet fully recovered. While our school was being repaired, our students had to travel to another building far from their homes. Because of this, my students are resilient and have established strong bonds. They support each other both inside and outside the classroom. They stay after school and come in on Saturdays to study together and work on projects. Every day during lunch, classrooms are filled with students who not only seek extra help, but also stop by to share their thoughts with teachers and look through classroom libraries.
