My classroom has a calming corner. When scholars are upset, they need some time to calm down, reflect on their behavior or just rest and spend time in the calming corner, before returning to their seat. Our scholars need to know that they can reset their negative behavior. When they have the tools and strategies to control their emotions they will naturally know how to communicate their needs and wants to adults, without escalating their emotions. Our scholars need comfortable seating, soft lighting, fidgets to use, and a timer that is not easily broken but can be seen by both me and the scholar. A calming corner creates an atmosphere of peacefulness in the classroom.
