I have forty three seventh grade students who long to have the time to write creatively, to create, compose and publish stories about characters they care about! Don’t you agree they deserve the chance?
Each spring, we study Science Fiction and read literature from renowned science fiction authors including Ray Bradbury, Robert Silverberg, Rod Serling and Isaac Asimov. Students enjoy the endless possibilities presented by the genre and are always eager to try their hand at it! Typically, I am able to reserve the computer lab or the laptop cart, so students can write their short stories. In recent years, we have been unable to utilize the computer labs due to requirements of standardized computer-based tests. My school of 646 students has 115 student computers total; our labs are utilized for six weeks straight so all students can complete the Smarter Balance state tests and the NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) district assessments! Technology is wasted on too much testing!
