The materials I am requesting are biology lab kits and supplies related to the 4 big ideas in AP Biology. In order to engage in the 4 big ideas, I plan to use the Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices in AP biology, so it is imperative that my students are able to actually DO science. Unfortunately, it is challenging to do science when many of my students find it difficult to spend money on science lab fees or purchase their own school supplies. It is for that reason I wish to supply them with everything they might need to actively engage in the science practices of AP biology. Tell me and I forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll learn! Labs and investigations are crucial components of the AP biology learning experience that will help students succeed on the AP exam. Students are expected to know how to analyze data and plan and carry out biological experiments. These lab supplies are often costly, and contain perishables that must be replaced every year. The lab supplies I have selected are for investigations that I thought would be fun and interactive and would help illuminate concepts and Next Generation Science Practices we learn about in class. For example, they will be able to use the Photosynthesis kit to investigate concepts related to energy transformations, the restriction enzymes kit to investigate concepts related to genetics, and the transpiration kit to investigate concepts related to ecosystem cycles. With these materials, my students will be able to learn beyond the confines of the textbook and web animations. They will be able to learn AP biology by conducting their own investigations. Please help support my students as they strive to learn AP biology through DOING science.
