Our school is located in a small community that would be considered fairly rural. We have around 680 students in grades Pre-K through 8th grade. My students come from low to middle income families. Many of my students come from single parent homes or are living with relatives. I have found over the years that the availability of appropriate reading materials in the homes of my students is minimal. In my opinion, if a child can find success in the early stages of learning and build a solid foundation in reading they are likely to have more success in other academic areas. This is the reason that I am trying to build my classroom library up to meet the needs of the individual student. I want each student to become a fluent reader and carry that success on with them throughout their lives.
