My students need A Place for Everyone Classroom Carpet for 20 for the physical space to sit criss-cross without their knees touching their neighbors', and it defines a boundary allowing them to be in charge of their own behavior. When students, or any people for that matter, are crammed into a smaller than adequate space, their experience in that space is less than enjoyable. Even a long anticipated dream vacation to Hawaii is less enjoyable in coach than in first class! Imagine a young child trying to pay attention during circle time. The child beside him is moving his knees and arms about, accidentally disturbing his neighbor. Unknowingly, he is invading that neighbors personal space. Simply put, our children do not have enough room to themselves. They need defined and sufficient boundaries. The boundary lines in our Donors Choose rug are perfectly defined rectangles to sitting criss-cross applesauce for twenty kids. Looking and listening can be challenging to a kindergartner. But the challenge is possible when their only concern is being in control of their own bodies. Children who are in control of their bodies are children who have more success focusing and learning, leading them to feel good about themselves. The children who are able to quietly listen to a story are later able to raise their hand and answer a question correctly. Children who keep their hands to themselves are quick to make friends. A space of their own can lend itself to giving children a reason to be proud.
