My 4th graders are active learners. They need hands-on projects in order for concepts to make sense. Whenever I introduce a new concept I try to find a hands-on activity, such as a experiment or building project, that will allow my students to see these concepts first hand. We started they year trying to see who could build the tallest tower using cups. They had to work together to not only build a steady structure but also try new ideas. They are always excited to come into my classroom. I have had to purchase most of the materials for these labs myself. I don't mind buying them but in order for my students to be able to build simple machines, I need materials that cost a lot more. I would love for my students to be able to not only experiment with building different structures, but also how alternate energy sources can run those machines.
