My students live all over the state of SC. They travel to and from school, each Friday to their home and then return to campus on Sunday. The bus ride can be as long as 6 hours each way. Our school offers a residential program and provides full services for the blind and deaf community. The majority of our students are poverty level and over 80% are on free lunch/ Medicaid. The students I teach are all legally blind or visually impaired. They are dependent on their Book Ports to record lectures, listen to books and their lap tops for typing assignments and communicating with teachers. The students that I work with are all in the local public high school and middle school. They are all diploma bound and capable of furthering their education beyond high school graduation. Vision Impaired students are dependent upon auditory learning strategies and must hear the information be repeated additional times in order to process and memorize the content. This requires additional power sources.
