The students in my classroom have a hard time being kind to one another. After teaching in general education for 3 years, I wasn't expecting the changes I would have to make as a special educator. It is my responsibility not only to teach them math, reading, and writing, but to teach the small things, such as respect, kindness and manners. 99% of my students are significantly below their grade level, and if the students were able to give and receive acts of kindness throughout the day, it would make the learning environment an enjoyable place to learn. They could use books and math manipulative's over the summer to keep them engaged in learning year round.
