My school is an urban neighborhood school in Queens, New York City. About 75% of my students live in poverty and many are the first generation to attend school in the United States, most of them just arriving within the past few years. A lot of my students come from Jamaica, Haiti, and Africa. In my classroom, I make mathematics relevant and interesting. I apply the concepts to situations that they can envision in the world around them to make the content relevant. To keep the material interesting, I use a lot of explorations and comparisons, as well as visual representations. While my students are working hard to adapt to their new life, I don't want them to experience the added frustration of not having the tools they need to be successful.
