I have been teaching middle school math for over twenty years and I know that teaching procedures is not enough. Having students exploring and discovering can move students from their informal understanding of math to a deeper conceptual understanding. The students in my classroom are diverse and hungry to learn as much as possible in math class. There is no typical day in my grade math class and that is part of why I love teaching math! While I want all students to learn grade level math, I want them to focus on their habits of mind. By the end of the year I want all students to demonstrate a growth mindset and believe that they can grow and that it is okay not to know how to do something YET!
