I teach at a magnet school for the academically motivated. We are a public school open to any student with the desire to take Honors, AP, or IB level classes. Many of my students are self-proclaimed nerds. While they love learning, many also excel at sports, the arts, and being regular teenagers. These students are socially conscious; our typical students do hundreds of hours of volunteer hours in the community. The vast majority of these students will go on to some college. However, that does not mean that they are rich or that learning higher level concepts is easy for them or even that all of them have a stable and supportive home life. Regardless of background, these students work for each grade. They bond together to make this school a truly unique experience in my city.
