My first grade classroom will be one of the first two full-inclusion classrooms at Kailua Elementary School next school year (2017-2018). A special education teacher and I will be piloting a plan to co-teach ELA (English Language Arts) and Math to students with different levels of abilities and learning styles. Some students will also have varying sensory needs. With standard classroom furniture and only one teacher, the classroom is already very tight. Mid-year I swapped out my teacher desk and single student desks for random tables around campus. The tables made way for a little more space to move around, but I still lost my teaching carpet in order to create a teacher table for small group instruction. Flexible seating is something I still want to explore, but we think furniture that isn't so stationary would best serve our incoming students. Each first grade class typically has about 25 students.
