My students come from generational poverty. They are tremendously sweet and helpful, but struggle with the value of education. They haven't had opportunities to experience first hand what the world has to offer, much less their own state. Most of them have not even been to a department store or a mall. This makes it extremely hard for my students to make connections to real-world opportunities that become available when you have a good education, thus education doesn't hold much value.
