Two, four, six, eight, what do we appreciate? A good learner! A good listener needs to have movement to keep them engaged and ready to learn. We can do this by allowing students to have a flexible classroom. In fact, I see this flexible seating as critical to enhancing learning across all ages, but let's just keep it in my 4th grade room for now. Other educators have reported that flexible seating is making their careers more enjoyable. So why should we have this flexible seat you ask? Here are some reasons why my students are loving the conversion to this change in the room. 1. They have choice. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. 2. Students get to work on their physical health. Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand. 3. COLLABORATE! Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class – without moving mountains of heavy desks to establish eye contact.
