The use of technology cannot be avoided; it surrounds us in almost every aspect of our daily lives. This is true even of our youngest learners. My Kindergarten students use technology in the classroom every day to play educational games in reading and math, listen to stories, and to improve problem solving and logical thinking skills. They are also assessed three times throughout the school year using a computer assessment. My students are the most eager and excited little learners but technology use at the beginning of Kindergarten is always a real struggle. Many of them do not have computers at home and have very limited, if any, experience using them. We start right away, showing them how use the mouse, click on things, use the keyboard to type numbers and letters, and put on the headphone and adjust the volume. Within a month or two, most of them are little experts! We will use Amazon Fire Tablets to provide even more practice with technology and to differentiate instruction during our reading and math centers. Using the tablets will allow students to work on skills they are struggling with and to move at their own pace.
