My students are everyday soldiers. They come from very low socioeconomic status neighborhoods and struggle to hold the feeling of security. Most, are raised by their oldest sibling, their grandparents and in some extreme cases by themselves. In their eyes, their world is very small. To many their highest aspirations are to graduate high school and follow in the footsteps of their peers. Many lack educational support and are fed by the lunch the school provides, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many love their teachers but refuse to allow their true feelings be exposed due to the fear of losing any consistency in their lives. However, my co-workers and others refuse to allow this obstacle get in the way of their purpose to help our students. In our eyes, they are the best, they simply need a little push and guide to find their true potential.
