My 100 or so students (about 40% with special needs and most of them qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch) are smart, funny, struggling, rebelling, testing boundaries, self-conscious, self-confident, disorganized, trying hard, hardly trying, and mostly showing up and giving their best. The school requires each students to have a 3" binder with dividers and loose leaf paper. Every day I am asked for pens, pencils, paper, and copies of materials they've misplaced. Some students really struggle with organization. Possibly because they're waiting for mom to be employed again so they can buy a binder, or replace the one they've broken, or because they don't want to ask at home because they know it'll be a stretch and they might get in trouble, or just because they keep forgetting, but really *this* is the weekend they'll get their supplies. Sometimes it's the students who need the most time to complete the necessary work who spend the most time trying to scrounge basic supplies so they can even get started.
