I currently serve 18 first graders in a K-4 school located in a very rural community. My students arrive at my classroom door from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Most of them are traditional first graders however I do serve three repeaters, as well. A small number of my kids live in a two-parent home while the majority are being raised by single-mothers and/or grandparents. Only a few of my kids have the financial support necessary to join sports groups and other youth organizations after school. The vast majority of my kids seem to allocate their evening hours either watching t.v. or playing video games. My school is a Title I school with a population of 650 plus students. We serve both breakfast and lunch and quite frequently use our cafetorium to engage our students' parents in literacy activities, movie nights, and other events to promote family time.
