My students all live in Baltimore, Maryland. The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic homes. This reality has impacted the amount of exposure they have to what life is like outside of Baltimore. Many of them have never had the opportunity to experience what a quality education can provide for them in the future. When we can provide them with adequate resources, they get excited to work on hands on science experiments. When their imagination kicks in and the content includes concepts they may have never considered before, they are quickly motivated to work their hardest to solve the task at hand. By creating rigor in the classroom and exposing them to content unknown, we can motivate them to think about their education as a life-long quest for knowledge that extends past high school to higher education and beyond.
