These pencils and supplies will show my students someone cares for them by providing the pencils with no strings attached. The pencils help me by removing a source of conflict and stress from my class. Yes, parents should supply their students. What happens when they don't? The school does not supply the students with pencils except on state test days. My job is to get them ready every day before test day, which means that I need pencils. And the student is caught in the middle, embarrassed by their parent's failure or their own to have a pencil. The pencils will work every day making it that much easier to learn Algebra. The students hear lots of adult talk about the importance of their education. Without a word, the pencils provided at their moment of need sends a strong signal that someone really does care about them.
