Dictionaries and Thesauruses are one of the most under-rated resources that a language arts teacher can have in their classroom. Yes, they are not flashy nor do they draw the excitement of say a Chromebook, but they are essential for developing writers. I am trying to end the epidemic of "stuff and things" within my students' writing. My students struggle with using words that are specific and add variety to their writing. To put it simply, their writing is boring and often hard to understand because it is vague. I don't always have access to technology to help assist in developing their writing, but a dictionary/thesaurus combination has so many applications within my classroom and would help fill this resource void. These will help supplement the vocabulary program I have added to my classes and will be more accessible than the old and tattered dictionaries and thesauruses that currently occupy the shelves. All of this is aimed at creating students that can express their thinking with detail and clarity.
