The ability to keep a beat and have rhythm have been associated with higher literacy skills and better fluency. My aim is to increase beat and rhythmic competency through the use of drums in the music classroom. The students will be using the tubanos to improve beat competency in order to also improve reading fluency and literacy. My students always get excited when we use the "big" drums in the music classroom; unfortunately we do no have enough of these kinds of drums for every all students. The drums will be used throughout the year to provide dynamic instruction in music and to supplement skills in other classroom subjects. The aim is create an exciting environment in the music classroom through the use of these tubanos.
