What was it like to be a young child in Denmark during the German occupation? Students will get the opportunity to learn through the eyes of the characters in the novel "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. We will use this book as a mentor text for our Fourth Grade unit on Historical Fiction. Students will read their own books, annotating the text by taking notes in the margins and personally connecting with the characters and problems. The story is beautiful and important and exposes our students to symbolism, as well as perspective. They'll also learn about courage, sacrifice and growing up in the face of adversity.
