I'm trying to push students towards a complete love of reading while engaging families to improve academic progress. This unit of study involves independent reading while responding to comprehension questions and discussions in book club. We will also be including families in the learning. By having students and their families reading together, I'm hoping to show some of the ways using literature is not only a way of educating but is exciting and enjoyable. Parents and guardians will not only be able to see what is happening daily at school but will also be introduced to a fantastic story that highlights the belief that if you have a dream and are willing to work to make it happen, you can rise above even the most humble beginnings. This is such a powerful message for families to receive. Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is loaded with figurative language, historical facts, and voice. The students can connect to some of the adventures the main character, Bud, embarks on. Your support will help us to hit the road and bring the joy of literacy to each student's home.
