My students are the most open, giving, sincere kids you will ever meet. They don't have a lot and learning does not come easy to them, but they try so hard and are determined to succeed. Our school is pretty big, about 850 students, but we really care about how each student turns out as a person. Everyone works together to make sure that no kid slips through the cracks. It takes a toll on us some days because our students need so much. Many of them don't have the clothes, food, or stable environment they need to be successful in school. It is not unusual to find teachers bringing in more supplies (food, clothing, pens, pencils) than a normal because we have to fill this enormous need. Not only do we have to do it for tangible things but we also have to fill the gap for a lot of the emotional support they are missing from home. I hug each one of my kids and tell them I love them everyday. At my school and in my class we aren't just students and teachers, we're family.
