Wouldn't it be neat if you could be inspired by another from all the way around the world? After my students dive into reading the story about William Kamkwamba, from Malawi, the inspiration that they should gain is how can they change their community? In small groups, they will be able to investigate with solar kits and activities with the wind. Here they will have the hands on activities that will help with critical thinking skills needed to come up with ideas on their own. In third grade, students have to be able to comprehend nonfiction text fluently. By building their understanding of the science topics with prior knowledge and hands on activities the students have a better grasp of what they are comprehending in the nonfiction books that they will be able to read throughout the unit.
