I teach students in grades from Pre-K to sixth. Nearly all of them live in poverty. They all receive free breakfasts and lunches. Many of their parents struggle to provide them with uniforms and school supplies. Our school is rapidly rising from a failing grade. In the past most of our students have scored far below their grade level in reading, writing and mathematic skills. I work with an amazing team, principal to custodian, that truly believe in our students and are helping them grow academically at an amazing rate. Not all school districts in the state of Oklahoma provide their students with an education that includes the Arts. I am truly lucky to have a job as an art teacher, plus to work with individuals that understand that Arts Integration is so important to learning. What my students lack in material things they make up for with imagination and desire. They are ready with ideas and the hardest part of each class is getting them to stop.
