At its most basic, Project LIT Community is an opportunity for students, teachers, and community members to read, share, discuss, and celebrate the stories that mean something to them. In essence, this is a book club with a bite, aimed at the avowed non-readers in our schools and based on two key concepts: (1) increasing student access to diverse, relevant texts and (2) promoting a community-wide love of reading. Integrated into existing English classes, Project LIT Community at NPS would be an opportunity for students not only to see themselves as readers but also to see the connections between the stories they read in school and the issues affecting the world beyond our walls. Beyond books, Project LIT Community is a chance for students to find a sense of belonging and count themselves among a diverse community of readers and writers, essential opportunities considering the chaos of the last couple years. Ultimately, Project LIT Community is about empowering the students of Norman Public Schools by providing them with as many positive, relevant reading experiences as possible. Many students do not consider themselves readers, but more often than not, they simply haven't found the right text. With more than 1,700 "chapters" across the country, Project LIT Community aims to address this issue by increasing student access to "high-quality, culturally sustaining books. Books that allow all students to see themselves in the pages. Books that communicate to all students that their voices and their stories matter—that they matter. Books that encourage us to write stories of our own. Books that spark important, necessary conversations. Books that remind us that we're not alone, and books that inspire us to make a difference. Books that inspire students to fall in love with reading again or for the first time.
